Someone shows up at your house and uses scare tactics, threats and urgency to gain entry into your home.
Your phone rings and a voice asks for your account number, credit card information or demands you pay your bill using a prepaid gift card.
In both scenarios they claim to be Consumers Energy employees, but they definitely are not.
Scammers are nothing new, but they do change up their technique from time to time. Count on us to protect you.
Use the following information to help spot a scam and protect yourself and your family.

We plan ahead. Before we visit, we try to provide notice by mailed postcards or letters, door hangers, emails or phone calls. That might not always be the case, however, when we’re responding to unplanned situations such as a gas leak.
Badges are like keys. We never leave home without them. Before allowing anyone into your home, always ask to see their Consumers Energy Employee or contractor badge.
Threats aren’t in our vocabulary. We never come to your home to collect payment on a past-due energy bill.
Keep your personal information personal. We won’t call and ask for your account number and we won’t show up asking to see your bill.
Safety First
There are times we have to shut off gas or electric service for safety, security or non-payment but our employees or contractors will always have identification and be happy to show it upon request.
You can call us at 800-477-5050 to confirm any visitor claiming to work on behalf of Consumers Energy. If you believe a scammer is trying to get into your home, lock all your doors, immediately call 911 and report it to the police.
