Nearly two hours before kickoff, Jerry Smith is living up to his tailgate maestro moniker as he prepares
Now dressed in his alma mater’s garb, he reflects on the uniform he wore earlier in the day – the yellow safety vest and hardhat required of our lineworker in charge.
It’s a job he’s just as passionate about as hosting family and friends for pre-game fun. And he knows without one, he couldn’t have the other. Across Michigan, players and fans alike count on Consumers Energy to power their Friday Night Lights.
“When they turn the lights on for these football games every Friday night, it’s me behind the scenes working to keep them on,” Smith said. “Trust me, if they go out, my phone rings and I know about it.”
And with that, it’s time for the game to start.
Helmets reflect the bright lights high above the field. And the marching band is at full crescendo, the football pads are popping and cheerleaders are rooting on their team. These are the sights and sounds of fall in Michigan – and we’re proud to be such a big part of it all.

The oldest rivalry in Michigan high school football is Battle Creek Central vs. Kalamazoo Central. They were scheduled to play their 121st game on Oct. 11, 2024. These rivals first squared off in 1893, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
