Prices are rising everywhere you look. When every dollar matters, we don’t want cost of energy service to be one of them.
Over the years, card payment fees have steadily increased – and while we haven’t charged customers transaction fees when using those cards, the fees must be covered somehow. We want to ensure energy costs are fair for all customers, and that means looking at what could drive up costs in the future and make changes to provide the best value for all customers.
So, what’s happening? On Oct. 1, 2023, we will:
- No longer accept debit and credit cards through auto-pay due to card company rules.
- Implement a flat per-transaction fee of $2.99* for debit and credit card payments for residential customer accounts.
- Restore card payment options for non-residential small business customers with a flat per-transaction fee of $9.99*.
What do you need to do?
Auto-Pay Customers
If you’re an existing auto-pay customer, please check your account at ConsumersEnergy.com/Login to confirm your payment method. If currently paying with a card:
- Update to a secure ACH payment through a checking or savings account
OR
- De-enroll from auto-pay if you prefer to make individual payments for your monthly energy bill.
If you already use a checking or savings account payment method, you are all set. No additional action is required from you.
Customers Not Using Auto-pay
If you are interested in using the convenience of auto-pay, you can enroll with a checking or savings account at ConsumersEnergy.com/Login.
If you would like to continue making individual payments for your monthly bill, you will begin seeing the fee added when you pay your bill with a credit or debit card through our website, over the phone or through our mobile app.
Fee-Free Options
We want to make sure you have options of when, where and how you pay your energy bill. As always, the following fee-free payment options will continue to be available:
